The idea behind Silver Ears is pretty simple: it's an ear training app for audio engineers with a 30-band graphical EQ interface. The inspiration behind this choice of interface is that EQ ear training -- in my opinion -- should emulate the experience of working with a real EQ on the field. If you find yourself working with 30-band graphics often (and many still do), then this app is perfect for you.
The app can test ISO preferred frequencies in addition to nonstandard frequencies. Training with non-standard frequencies in particular can be quite a challenge considering that you must not only recognize the frequency but also compare it to your memory of ISO frequencies in order to make the best cut on the EQ. You essentially must be able to hear two frequencies at once, one of which from memory. Getting this down is tough -- but with practice, you can make it routine.
Another great thing about Silver Ears is that it tests feedback frequencies of different attack/release times. The fastest feedback has a total duration of 100ms, meaning you must recognize frequencies in small bursts of feedback. Being able to nail quick feedback is very useful for those who work with small stages and/or crazy artists who swing microphones all over the place.
You can get Silver Ears for free on the App Store for the iPhone. I'm hoping that a future version will include the ability to test with different EQs, including British, parametric, and so on. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
